A Rose Is

The FLAG Art Foundation is pleased to announce A Rose Is, an expansive group exhibition that examines the representational ubiquity and multivalent meaning of the rose throughout art history and popular culture. Drawing inspiration from Cy Twombly’s monumental, four-part painting The Rose III (2008), the exhibition takes this work as its thematic core for the way it situates the rose—both physically and figuratively—as an icon of beauty, enticement, excess and abjection, all at once.
A Rose Is will feature artworks by Polly Apfelbaum, Arakawa & Madeline Gins, Genesis Belanger, Louise Bourgeois, James Lee Byars, Sara Cwynar, Alex Da Corte, Ethyl Eichelberger, Awol Erizku, Tony Feher, Allison Janae Hamilton, Sarah Jones, Anselm Kiefer, Lee Krasner, Dr. Lakra, Robert Mapplethorpe, Nicolas Party, Irving Penn, Kay Rosen, James Rosenquist, Taryn Simon, Kiki Smith, Andy Warhol, among others.
